When Avery mentioned her boyfriend Gianni was flying in from Boston for a few days, she casually added that they were planning a date night in Perkins Rowe. If you know me, you know Perkins Rowe is one of my favorite places to shoot — the architecture, the texture, the pockets of light, and the “little city” feel make it a dream for editorial-style photography.

So I made her an offer:

“Let me third-wheel for 45 minutes before dinner — on one condition: I get full creative control.”

She said yes.

Gianni shrugged and smiled (which I took as another yes).

And from there, this session absolutely took off.

Starting on the Cinemark Stairs — Direct Flash + Movement

We kicked things off on the iconic staircase that flanks the Cinemark Theatre. Those patterned tiles, the warm overhead lights, and the slight holiday glow made the perfect backdrop for the paparazzi-style direct flash I’ve been dying to try.

I wanted motion — real, unposed, mid-step moments.

I wanted the energy of a couple stepping out for a night on the town.

And these two delivered.

Walking down those stairs hand in hand, laughing, brushing shoulders — it was instant magic.

Urban Outfitters Blue Doors — Playful, Cinematic Vibes

From Cinemark we wandered toward one of my favorite architectural details in Perkins Rowe: the large teal-blue double doors at Urban Outfitters.

The tone and texture of those doors are a dream with flash.

Avery and Gianni looked like they were stepping into their own mini movie scene — laughing, twirling, and just being completely themselves. That’s where the editorial energy really started kicking in.

Crosswalk Moments With Fresh Market in the Background

You cannot take a walk through Perkins Rowe without ending up in a spot that looks like a film still — and the crosswalk between the center and Fresh Market is one of those spots.

So we stepped into the street (safely, of course!) and captured one of my favorite frames of the entire night.

The movement, the light, the clean lines — and that iconic Fresh Market façade behind them — gave the whole image the feeling of a cinematic city date night.

Altar’d State White Brick Wall — Soft, Sexy Editorial Flash

We continued our loop and stopped at the white textured wall outside Altar’d State. It’s simple, but it photographs beautifully with flash — bright, clean, and crisp.

This is where the mood shifted from playful to intimate.

Forehead touches.

Full-body laughter.

Little moments that feel sexy without trying.

This wall is always a go-to for me in Perkins Rowe, and these photos prove exactly why.

Ending the Night at Bin 77 Sidecar — Moody Bar Glow

Finally, we ducked into Bin 77 Sidecar, which is one of my absolute favorite spots for nighttime portraits. The low ambient light mixed with direct flash creates the perfect moody editorial look.

Avery sliding onto the barstool in that gorgeous dress?

Gianni leaning in behind her, both of them laughing?

That’s the kind of photo you frame even if it wasn’t meant to be a “session.”

And honestly, the bar staff deserves a medal for letting us take over a corner without hesitation.

Why I Love Shooting in Perkins Rowe

Perkins Rowe allows you to shoot an entire story — multiple moods, textures, and settings — all within a short walk:

Cinemark’s patterned-tile staircase

✨ The distinctive Urban Outfitters doors

Fresh Market’s classic façade

✨ Clean white brick near Altar’d State

✨ The sultry glow of Bin 77 Sidecar

✨ And every sidewalk, lantern, and brick pathway in between

You can go from bright editorial flash… to candid movement… to moody bar portraits… all in under an hour.

Avery and Gianni trusted the process completely — and because of that, their date-night session became something that feels both cinematic and personal.
