There’s no place like home for family photos.
Some of my favorite sessions have happened right where life unfolds — in my clients’ own living rooms, backyards, and kitchens. There’s something special about capturing your family in the space where the laughter (and the mess) really happens.
In-home sessions are perfect for families who want photos that feel natural, emotive, and true to life — not overly posed or polished, just genuine moments that tell your story.
Step 1: Choose the Space That Feels Most “You”
You don’t need a picture-perfect home — promise. All I need is good light and a little breathing room. Think about where your family naturally gathers:
Maybe it’s the couch where movie nights happen
The kitchen where little hands sneak cookie dough
Or the backyard where everyone plays
If the light is soft and the laughter is real, that’s the perfect spot.
Step 2: Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable
The goal is to look like you, just pulled together.
Stick to soft, neutral tones or subtle textures — they photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connections.
Avoid bright logos or perfectly matching outfits; instead, coordinate in a way that feels effortless.
If you’re unsure, I’ll help you plan! My Style Guide includes color palettes and examples that work well for indoor and outdoor settings.
(Pro tip: barefoot always works.)
Step 3: Embrace the Beautiful Chaos
Kids will be kids — and that’s where the magic happens. Don’t stress if someone runs off mid-photo or starts giggling uncontrollably. Those are often the moments that end up framed on the wall.
I’ll gently guide you into flattering light and then step back, letting the real moments unfold — the cuddles, the laughter, the in-betweens that tell your family’s story.
Step 4: Prep Your Space (Lightly)
You don’t need to deep clean for me. A quick tidy-up in the areas we’ll photograph is plenty. Turn off overhead lights, open the blinds, and let that beautiful natural light in. A few personal touches — a throw blanket, fresh flowers, or your child’s favorite toy — help tell your story in small, meaningful ways.
Step 5: Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
The best photos happen when you stop worrying about what you look like and start feeling what’s real. Hold your babies close, laugh at the chaos, and be present. I’ll take care of the rest.
