There are birthday photos—and then there are birthday portraits that make the celebration itself an experience.


For Avery's 23rd birthday, we created a Baton Rouge birthday photoshoot that was playful, glamorous, editorial and just a little over-the-top. In other words: exactly what a birthday portrait session should be.


As a Baton Rouge portrait photographer, I've photographed plenty of traditional milestones, but I absolutely love the growing trend of women booking professional portraits simply because another trip around the sun deserves to be celebrated. You don't need an engagement, a wedding, a new baby or a professional reason to get in front of the camera.


Sometimes the milestone is simply you.


For Avery, we created three completely different looks for her birthday portrait session: a bright studio setup filled with pink and confetti, a glamorous editorial session inside our Victorian-inspired Baton Rouge office, and an outdoor finale involving a motorcycle, champagne and one very satisfying pop.


And somehow, every bit of it felt completely like her.

A Fun Baton Rouge Birthday Photoshoot With Plenty of Confetti


We started Avery's 23rd birthday photoshoot in the studio with a pink backdrop, a white mini dress and what turned out to be an unreasonable amount of pink, black and silver confetti.


This gave me an excuse to lean heavily into one of my favorite parts of portrait photography: controlled studio lighting.


I love studio photography because we're not waiting for perfect Louisiana weather or hoping the light decides to cooperate. I can build the light around the person I'm photographing and create something polished and intentional while still leaving plenty of room to play.


And we played.


Throw the confetti. Toss it again. Lie in it. Laugh when it lands absolutely everywhere. Throw some more.


These are the kinds of birthday portraits for women I want to create—beautiful photographs, yes, but also an experience that actually feels like a celebration.


And months later, I am still finding confetti everywhere.


I have accepted that it lives here now.

Birthday Portraits Can Be Glamorous, Sexy and Completely Grown-Up


Next, we changed the mood entirely.


Avery traded her short white birthday dress for a long, shimmering blush gown, and we moved into our Victorian-inspired office for something much more editorial.


This space is one of my favorite places to create editorial portraits in Baton Rouge. Dark damask wallpaper, antique furniture, books, rich red curtains and beautiful pockets of window light give me an environment that feels worlds away from a traditional portrait studio.


Add a glamorous gown, champagne and a gorgeous birthday girl, and suddenly we're creating something that feels more like a fashion editorial than a conventional birthday photoshoot.


And that's the point.


An adult birthday photoshoot doesn't have to mean balloons, a cake and a giant number announcing your age—unless you want those things.


Your birthday session can be sophisticated. It can be sexy. It can be glamorous, understated, dramatic, playful or completely extravagant.


It can be whatever version of yourself you want to celebrate.


For this part of Avery's gallery, I played with dramatic window light, reflections, layers and foreground elements to create photographs with the cinematic, slightly voyeuristic quality I love. We also mixed in direct-flash black-and-white photographs for an entirely different energy—less perfectly posed portrait and more photograph from a fabulous party you wish you'd been invited to.


That's the sweet spot for me as a Baton Rouge photographer.


I want to give you the beautiful portrait.


But I also want the photograph that feels like something was actually happening when I pressed the shutter.

Finishing Her Baton Rouge Birthday Session With Champagne and a Motorcycle


At this point, we could have stopped.


Obviously, we did not.


We headed outside with the gown, champagne and my husband's Royal Enfield motorcycle because sometimes an idea doesn't need to be complicated to be good.


The blush gown against the white motorcycle gave us an entirely new look while still connecting beautifully with the rest of Avery's gallery. The late Louisiana sunlight brought in another element I love incorporating into my work, and we moved from the controlled environment of our indoor sets to something looser and more spontaneous.


We created classic editorial portraits around the motorcycle, played with her reflection in the mirror and then ended Avery's birthday session the only appropriate way:


with a champagne pop.


It was fun, unexpected and the perfect final chapter to a creative birthday photoshoot in Baton Rouge that had already moved from playful studio portraits to moody editorial glamour.

Yes, You Can Book a Photoshoot Just Because It's Your Birthday


This is the part I really want women to hear:


You do not need another reason.


We're very good at documenting the milestones involving everyone else. Weddings. Babies. Graduations. Family portraits. Anniversaries.


But what about celebrating yourself?


I'm seeing more women embrace birthday photography sessions as an opportunity to mark where they are right now—not because they need photographs for something, but because they want them.


I am completely here for it.


Maybe you're turning 21, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 60. Maybe it isn't a traditionally significant birthday at all. Maybe you've had a phenomenal year. Maybe you've survived a terrible one. Creative Birthday Photography for Women in Baton Rouge and South Louisiana


One of my favorite things about creative portrait photography is building a session around the person rather than forcing every client into the same formula.


Avery's session allowed me to combine so many things I love as a Louisiana portrait photographer: controlled studio lighting, editorial portraiture, creative storytelling, dramatic interiors, natural Louisiana light, movement, texture and personality.


We started against a pink studio backdrop surrounded by confetti and ended outside beside a motorcycle with champagne flying through the air.


That's a pretty good way to celebrate 23.


And it's exactly the kind of Baton Rouge women's portrait session I want to photograph more of—portraits that are polished without feeling sterile, editorial without taking themselves too seriously, and designed around the woman standing in front of my camera.
