Why Your Dog Absolutely Belongs in Your Family Photos | Baton Rouge Couples Session at LSU Hilltop Arboretum

Some sessions take a little extra patience to bring to life—and when they finally do, they’re absolutely worth it.

Last summer, I donated a portrait session to a local raffle, and sweet Destinee was the winner. After plenty of scheduling hurdles (because life happens), we finally made it happen on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum in Baton Rouge.

Destinee, her partner, and their adorable pup Bud met me for what turned into one of the sweetest, most personality-filled sessions.

From the start, Destinee and her partner admitted they were a little shy in front of the camera—but honestly, you’d never know it from their images. With just a little gentle direction, they settled in beautifully, allowing genuine smiles, soft moments, and playful interactions to naturally unfold.

And then there was Bud.

Bud completely stole the show.

Whether he was soaking up attention from curious passersby, showing off his expressive personality, or posing proudly with his humans, he brought so much joy and energy to this session. People walking through the arboretum couldn’t help but smile and give him googly eyes—and honestly, I get it.

Because let’s be real:  Dogs are family too.

Including your pup in your family or couples session adds such a personal, meaningful layer to your photos. They’re part of your everyday life, your love story, and your memories—so why shouldn’t they be documented right alongside you?

This session was the perfect reminder that family photography doesn’t have to fit into one box. Your family can look however you want it to look—whether that includes kids, no kids, or four-legged best friends.

At the LSU Hilltop Arboretum, with its soft natural light, sprawling greenery, and relaxed atmosphere, we created a gallery that felt authentic, playful, and full of heart.

Bud may have been the unexpected star, but the real magic was capturing this little family exactly as they are.

If you’ve been considering bringing your dog to your next session, this is your sign: do it.

You’ll never regret documenting this season with every member of your family included.
