Preparing for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session

Guidance Without Pressure

Preparing for your lifestyle newborn session doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. This guide is designed to help you feel calm and supported—from simple styling guidance to knowing what to expect—so your time together feels natural, unhurried, and true to your family.

These recommendations are simply that: gentle guidance. The most meaningful newborn images come from comfort, connection, and being fully present in these early days.

To help us have a calm, sleepy baby and make the most of our time together, here are a few helpful tips to prepare before I arrive:

Keep your little one Awake Before the Session

Please try to keep your little one awake for 45 minutes–1 hour prior to my arrival.

  • Helpful ways to do this:
  • A bath
  • A full feeding
  • Diaper changes or gentle interaction
  • This helps him be more likely to sleep during photos.

Warm, Cozy Environment

  • Please keep the house a bit warmer than usual.
  • If you have a space heater, feel free to have it nearby (not pointed directly at the baby).

Before I Arrive

  • Try to have your little one fed and content, but not actively feeding when I arrive.
  • Dress him/her in something simple and easy to remove.

Including Parents

  • If you’d like to be included in images with your baby, please plan to be camera ready.
  • Neutral tones photograph best and help keep the focus on your connection with him/her.
  • Simple, natural moments work beautifully in your home—such as:
  • Holding your baby in front of the window
  • Sitting together on the sofa with him/her
  • We’ll capture baby on his/her own first, and parent images can be done afterward if desired.
  • Suggested Neutral Color Palette for Parents
  • Neutral tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on connection rather than clothing, resulting in timeless images.
